Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM), formulated by Government of India in 2005, aims to encourage cities to initiate steps to bring about improvement in the existing service levels in a financially sustainable manner.
Mission Statement
The aim is to encourage reforms and fast-track planned development of identified cities. Focus is on efficiency in urban infrastructure and services delivery mechanisms, community participation, and accountability of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs)/Parastatal agencies towards citizens.
Project Cities
Thiruvananthapuram (Capital City) and Kochi (Million Plus City) feature among the 63 cities/ULBs selected from across the country. The MOAs were signed with the Government of India on 10 March 2007.
Nodal Agency
Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP) is the State-level nodal agency (SLNA) for the Urban Infrastructure and Governance component of JnNURM. A Sate-level steering committee with the Chief Minister as Chairperson has been formed. The period for implementation is 2005-’06 to 2011-’12.
